Ranked 104th in the world (QS World University Rankings 2024) and a member of the Russell Group, the University of Sheffield is a leading research university with a global reputation for excellence.  In fact, 92 per cent of our research is rated in the highest two categories in the REF 2021 meaning it is classed as world-leading or internationally excellent. The REF results demonstrate our research and impact excellence across a broad range of disciplines and confirm that our research is having a significant positive impact on lives across the globe.

More than 29,000 students from over 150 countries, including 200 from the USA, choose to come and study at Sheffield. Our passionate and collegiate community of academics and researchers deliver world-class teaching across a wide range of disciplines in our five faculties: Arts and Humanities; Social Sciences; Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing; Medicine, Dentistry and Health; and Science.

Outside the classroom, students benefit from Sheffield’s high quality accommodation, leading sports facilities and a thriving social scene. Our Students’ Union is the hub of all social activities for students, and provides a range of clubs and societies, events, student support and volunteering opportunities. It has been voted the best Students’ Union in the UK for the past six years (Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2017-2023).

Home to more than half a million people, Sheffield is a vibrant city with a reputation for being friendly and welcoming. It’s been voted one of the most affordable student cities in the UK (2023 Natwest's Student Living Index). Boasting more parks and woodlands than any other UK city, Sheffield is known for its music, art and digital scenes, striking Victorian and modern architecture, champion sport facilities, historic country houses, and rich and varied heritage.
