Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health
The Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health are offered through a partnership between the Fulbright Program and the Fogarty International Center of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. These awards were established to promote the expansion of research in public health and clinical research in resource-limited settings. The Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships were inaugurated in July 2011 with four fellows in Sub-Saharan Africa (Botswana, Malawi, and South Africa). Approximately 10 awards are made annually.
Fulbright-Fogarty Fellows will affiliate with established biomedical and health research institutions and project sites associated with the Fogarty International Center’s Launching Future Leaders in Global Health (LAUNCH) Research Training Program [https://www.fic.nih.gov/Programs/Pages/scholars-fellows-global-health.aspx]. Fulbright-Fogarty applicants can be enrolled at any U.S. university, i.e. applicants need not be enrolled at any of the U.S. universities affiliated with the LAUNCH Program.
By the start of the program year (July 2025), fellows must be an MD (and other professional degrees) student who has completed their 3rd year or a Ph.D. candidate who has completed their Master’s level requirements (i.e., post-qualifying exam). The basic requirements and process for applying for the Fulbright-Fogarty Program are the same as for any Fulbright U.S. Student Study/Research Grant.
Fulbright-Fogarty Fellows will be incorporated into the following consortia in select countries:
- Addressing the Research Capacity Gap in Global Child and Adolescent Health Disparities Utilizing Implementation and Data Sciences among Vulnerable Populations in Resource-limited Settings (ACHIEVE)
- Northern Pacific Global Health Leadership, Education, and Development for Early-Career Researchers (NPGH LEADERs)
- Partnership for Global Health Research Training Program (HBNU)
- UJMT Global Consortium: Building Research Capacity through Mentored Training (UJMT)
- University of California Global Health Institute Program for Fellows and Scholars (GLOCAL)
- Global Health Emerging Scholars (GHES)
Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships carry the same benefits as the traditional Fulbright Study/Research grants to the host country. The Fogarty International Center may provide orientation for the fellows at the NIH.
By the start of the program year (July 2026), fellows must be an MD (and other professional degree) student who has completed their 3rd year or a Ph.D. candidate who has completed their master’s level requirements (i.e., post-qualifying exam). The basic requirements and process for applying for the Fulbright-Fogarty Program are the same as for any Fulbright U.S. Student Study/Research Grant.
