2025-2026 Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Program Information
The countries listed above are those in which it is anticipated that there will be grants for the current academic year. If the country that you are interested in is not listed, then currently there is no Fulbright U.S. Student Program in that country.
Selection for countries in the Middle East and North Africa will be made based on the quality of the applications, rather than per-country quotas. Distribution of awards to countries in the region may vary annually according to the caliber of the applicants. See the country summary for details.
English Teaching Assistant Programs are available to:
Algeria, Bahrain, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and the Palestinian Territories (West Bank).
Study/Research Award Programs are available to:
Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates.
Grants are not available to:
Palestinian Territories (Gaza), Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Qatar, Syria, or Yemen.
Multi-country proposals:
Multi-country applications are not accepted.
Grant Period:
May vary for independent research. However, grantees affiliating with academic institutions should expect their grant to coincide with the academic year for the most part.
Affiliation:
At this time, study/research awards to Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, United Arab Emirates, and Tunisia require affiliation letters at the application deadline. Israel requires them during the semi-finalist stage. All the other study/research awards to the Middle East and North Africa recommend obtaining affiliation letters with an educational and/or research or other institution in the host country if possible. If this is not possible, it is best to identify appropriate host institutions in the application. However, the host country makes the final arrangements in placing grantees at the appropriate academic institutions. Applicants are encouraged to establish contact with potential host institutions as early as possible. Faculty and/or administrators within the MENA region may be difficult to reach from June through August. See the country summary for details.
Clearances:
Candidates are responsible for securing visa and research clearances, as required. In countries with Fulbright Commissions, assistance may be provided. Please note that government and research clearances can be a lengthy process in some countries such as Egypt and Oman, and may require additional information.
Dependents:
Dependent support varies. See country summary for details.
