Award Profile
The Fulbright Chile Partnerships Award provides U.S. graduate students with a structured opportunity to conduct research at selected accredited universities and leading research centers in Chile. This award follows a targeted and results-oriented model, aligning student research projects with predefined institutional strengths and collaborative priorities identified by partner institutions.
Up to five grants are awarded under this framework. Preference is given to Master’s and Ph.D. students conducting thesis or dissertation research. Projects must demonstrate clear alignment with the academic and research interests of the participating host institutions.
Graduating seniors and recent graduates may also be considered when proposing a research project that includes audited coursework. In such cases, the selection of courses must be negotiated directly with the prospective host institution in Chile and should support the research methodologies relevant to the proposed project. Audited courses do not carry academic credit, and grantees may not formally enroll in degree programs.
Prospective applicants are strongly encouraged to contact potential host institutions to confirm the feasibility of their project and institutional interest prior to submitting an application.
Areas of Interest
Applications are especially welcome in science and technology fields, including astronomy, earth sciences, engineering, mathematics, biology, geology, food science, forestry, mining, oceanography, aquaculture, energy systems, biotechnology, physics, environmental sciences, ecology, and chemistry. These areas reflect current strengths and collaborative priorities within participating Chilean institutions; however, they are not exclusive.
Proposals in other academic disciplines may also be considered, provided they align with the research interests and strategic priorities of the selected host institution. All proposed projects must correspond to areas in which the participating Chilean institutions have expressed interest in collaboration. Applicants are therefore strongly encouraged to ensure that their proposal clearly aligns with the academic strengths, ongoing initiatives, and institutional focus areas of their intended host.
Grant Length
Grant Period
Grant Length: 9 months
All grantees must arrive before or at the beginning of March 2028 to conduct research for the full academic year. Grant dates must correspond to the academic year in Chile (March to November). The grant period starts with an obligatory enhancement organized by the Fulbright Commission in early March 2028.
While you may note a preference for other start dates in your application, exceptions are exceedingly rare, given only for extraordinary research conditions (e.g., winter season glacier study); as such, after your application has been approved, any dates not starting in March must be approved in writing by the Commission in Chile.
Orientation
The in-country orientation typically takes place in March.
Candidate Profile
This award prioritizes Master’s and doctoral candidates conducting thesis or dissertation research in Chile. At-Large candidates who have recently completed a terminal Master’s degree may also be considered. Applicants holding only a bachelor’s degree must demonstrate relevant professional experience if not currently enrolled in graduate study.
Projects must demonstrate a clear need to conduct research in Chile and articulate potential binational impact. Proposals must align with the research strengths and collaborative interests of one of the participating partner institutions associated with this award, and applicants must establish formal affiliation prior to applying.
Strong candidates will present academically rigorous and well-defined research proposals, demonstrate clear institutional alignment with a participating partner university or research center, show potential for sustained academic collaboration, and articulate the broader relevance of their work to U.S.–Chile scholarly exchange.
Proficiency in Spanish is beneficial for academic integration but is not required.
What is life like for Fulbrighters in the host country?
Applicants are expected to research their host country. Application materials should indicate a clear commitment to the host country community and a description of how you will engage with it.

Affiliation
Applicants must obtain a formal letter of affiliation or invitation from a faculty member or designated contact at one of the eligible partner institutions prior to submitting the application.
Under this award, placements must be undertaken at one of the Chilean universities or research centers formally in partnership with Fulbright Chile:
The host institution’s letter must confirm institutional support for the proposed project, attest to the applicant’s academic background and preparation, and indicate that the proposed research is feasible within the host environment.
The affiliation plays a substantive role in the U.S. Student Program. It is not merely administrative; it establishes an active academic relationship. The letter must clearly describe the nature of the affiliation, such as collaboration within an ongoing research project, access to facilities and research infrastructure, methodological guidance, or other forms of academic engagement.
The host institution must also designate a faculty mentor or contact person who will provide ongoing academic oversight and support during the grant period.
Applicants are responsible for initiating contact with the prospective host institution to discuss project feasibility and alignment with institutional research priorities before requesting a formal letter of affiliation.
