Award Profile

The Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health are offered through a partnership between the Fulbright Program and the Fogarty International Center of the U.S. National Institutes of Health. These awards were established to promote the expansion of research in public health and clinical research in resource-limited settings.

Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships carry the same benefits as the traditional Fulbright Study/Research grants to the host country. The Fogarty International Center, NIH, will provide support to the research training site and may provide orientation for the fellows at the NIH.

As a condition of their grants, all grantees may be required to participate in a Pre-Departure Orientation during the summer of 2025.

Candidate Profile

Pre-doctoral trainees:

Must be enrolled in an accredited doctoral-level program (MD, PhD, DDS, or comparable degree from an accredited institution) in public health, government, business, design, engineering, education, medicine, nutrition, law, pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and nursing. Eligible doctoral degrees include, but are not limited to: DMD, DC, DO, DVM, OD, DPM, ScD, EngD, DrPH, DNSc, DPT, PharmD, ND, DSW, PsyD, JD and Doctorate of Philosophy in Nursing.

Health-professional students who wish to interrupt their studies for a year or more to engage in full-time research training before completing their formal training programs are also eligible.

By the start of the program year (July 2024), fellows must be an MD (and other professional degrees) student who has completed their 3rd year or a Ph.D. candidate who has completed their Master’s level requirements (i.e., post-qualifying exam).

What is life like for Fulbrighters in the host country?

In regional cities, university facilities and infrastructure, living conditions and quality of life, accommodations, and academic programs have improved, but are still developing. Ethiopian universities are led by young, energetic faculty and an administration eager to host foreign scholars. For newer universities, deans and department chairs may be under the age of thirty-five, hold only a master’s degree, and lack strong managerial, international or leadership experience. Students are eager to learn, to acquire knowledge, and to develop skills that will lead to employment opportunities or post-graduate studies.

Summary of Site

Addis Ababa University (AAU) is the oldest and most prestigious university in Ethiopia. It is a proud leader in higher education and knowledge creation and frequently collaborates with U.S. and European universities in research partnerships. The College of Health Sciences in Addis Ababa University is comprised of four schools and one teaching hospital: the School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, School of Public Health, School of Allied Health Sciences, and the Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH). The College trains highly skilled professionals in the health sciences, with students in over 70 postgraduate programs. Additionally, TASH is the largest specialized hospital in all of Ethiopia, providing patient care to Ethiopians who seek services from all corners of the country, providing the academic community unparalleled opportunities for advanced training, practice and research.

The faculty members of the College are some of the brightest health professionals in the country. The 110+ faculty members are involved in numerous nationally and internationally funded projects and activities as PIs and Co-PIs and have many accomplishments that include the highest level of scholarship. The projects include AAU-driven work as well as collaborations with different universities and institutions worldwide. There were more than 70 active research projects in 2023. The projects are funded by a variety of health research funders including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, USAID, the World Health Organization, the International Development Research Center, the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, and more. 

AAU has research programs that focus on maternal and child health, including emergency obstetric care; acute and chronic management of cardiac, renal, oncologic, and neurodegenerative diseases; epidemiology and management of trauma and injury; mental health, including gender-based violence, substance abuse, psychosis, depression; communicable diseases such as HIV and TB and their treatment and prevention at the community level; and hospital infection prevention and control programs to promote antibiotic stewardship and reduce antimicrobial resistance.

Addis Continental Institute of Public Health (ACIPH) - HBNU

Summary of Site

ACIPH is an independent center of excellence for public health research and training. Established in 2006, ACIPH is an accredited higher learning institute and provides technical services and training in major health issues in Africa. The Institute has highly qualified core technical experts and a number of associate consultants in the various fields of health and social sciences. Institute investigators and students focus their research efforts on major public health problems such as reproductive health, child health, nutrition and food security, non-communicable diseases, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, as well as other emerging and re-emerging public health challenges. Investigators provide training and technical assistance in methodological issues such as data management, analysis and report writing in both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. ACIPH’s main objectives are: 

  • Conduct training programs to enhance performance in health services and program management. 
  • Support evidence-based practice by conducting research and monitoring and evaluation activities
  • Provide technical support for organizations and/or individuals engaged in collecting, analyzing, and dissemination of health and population data/information. 
  • Develop and undertake training programs to support human resource development in the continent.

Harvard University has worked in partnership with the Addis Continental Institute of Public Health (ACIPH) for many years to conduct important research and train early-career researchers. Research collaborations have centered around pediatric infectious diseases, maternal and child health, and nutrition. HBNU is seeking to continue this history of collaboration through the hosting of Fulbright-Fogarty Fellows. Fellows would be expected to work with their US and Ethiopian mentors to develop a research project related to ongoing work or in a new area of interest.
