Award Profile
North Macedonia and the United States enjoy a cooperative relationship across a broad range of political, economic, cultural, and military issues. The two have had a strong bilateral relationship since North Macedonia gained its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. The United States formally recognized North Macedonia in 1994, and the countries established full diplomatic relations in 1995. The United States is committed to helping North Macedonia embrace democratic governance, secure its borders against transnational criminal and security threats, become a stronger NATO Ally, strengthen and diversify its economy, and promote freedom of speech.
North Macedonia is an excellent country in which to serve as an ETA. In recent years, ETAs have been placed at public universities or secondary schools throughout the country with very positive experiences.
The citizens of North Macedonia are very hospitable and friendly toward U.S. citizens. There are also five American Corners where the ETAs can conduct different extracurricular activities. In addition, there are numerous NGOs and other professional associations where you can support or run your own projects.
The level of spoken English among the young population is very high. However, a native speaker can always make a difference! To be an ETA in North Macedonia, it is not required to know the local languages.
North Macedonia is characterized by immense natural beauty: high mountaintops rich in flora and fauna; rivers and tectonic lakes; and numerous thermal springs, basins, and valleys. Your experience in North Macedonia will make you want to return again.
