Award Profile
Grantee will pursue an exciting education curatorial project up to 12 months working with the Hugh Lane Gallery education team. The project will contribute to the gallery's strategy and that of Dublin City Council of embedding a culture of continuous engagement and learning between the Hugh Lane Gallery and Dublin's communities. The project will involve working with communities in the city as well in the gallery, establishing and developing strong links between the cultural institution and the communities. Schedules of innovative programs and workshops with structures capable of long term engagement will be investigated and implemented.
The Hugh Lane Gallery was established in 1908 and is believed to be the oldest public gallery of Modern Art in the Western World. The founder Hugh Lane with his supporters presented Dublin with a collection of 19th and early 20th century art. Hugh Lane was also a great champion of Irish art and the gallery has the foremost collection of 20th-century Irish art. The collection has grown from 300 works in 1908 to over 2,200 in 2024. The gallery has a vibrant and ambitious schedule of temporary exhibitions, acquisitions and education projects. In the ethos of its founder, the gallery continues to support and acquire contemporary art. In recent years the gallery has received notable gifts and bequests including Francis Bacon's studio and archive and a collection of works by Sean Scully. In 1933, the gallery moved from its temporary residence to Charlemont House built in 1763. In 2006, a new wing was built, doubling the gallery's exhibition spaces. The gallery is a registered charity and is part of Dublin City Council. See www.hughlane.ie.

What is life like for Fulbrighters in the host country?
Ireland is a friendly, engaging and vibrant country with centuries of U.S. interaction as part of its DNA. As an increasingly diverse society with a highly educated workforce, competitive educational system and millennia of culture, it is a popular choice for U.S. Student applicants.
Higher education in Ireland is provided by 12 universities, 2 Institutes of Technology, and a number of specialist colleges in art, business, law, music, medicine and theology. There are also a significant number of well-funded research centres and cultural institutions that may be considered as host options.
Irish colleges typically operate on a two-semester academic year: September to December and January to May. Further information on higher education in Ireland can be found here.
Most Higher Education Institutions are supported by the Irish government. For example, universities and Institutes of technology receive more than 90 percent of their income from the state. The Irish government has invested 2.5 billion euro establishing advanced centres of research, and world-class research facilities and programs that are an attractive destination for international exchange visitors.
Fulbright Alumni cite the following advantages associated with coming to Ireland: English-speaking; very welcoming; family-friendly; safe; intellectually challenging; culturally rich and diverse; and accessible.
