Award Profile
Each year, the Australian-American Fulbright Commission awards several Postgraduate (General Category) awards. These awards are available in any discipline and sponsor research programs that enhance bilateral relations and embody the mission of the Fulbright program.
Please note that applications proposing enrollment in an Australian postgraduate program (i.e. a Master’s program) are not eligible for this award. This award is designed for visiting student researchers.
Grant Length
Grant Period
Candidates carrying out research must commence their grants at the start of the university year in January or February 2028 with the specific start date agreed upon by both grantee and host institution (as early as July 2027 in some cases - by approval only.)
Orientation
Fulbright offers an in-person Orientation program in late February. The program includes a multi-day conference with Australian and American awardees, and concludes with an awards ceremony and Gala event, attended by distinguished delegates from Australian universities, government, cultural and research institutions, and other VIPs from the US and Australia.
Candidate Profile
Candidates at the Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degree levels are invited to apply. Fulbright Australia has a preference for applicants who have not received a previous Fulbright award. Additionally, the Commission is especially interested in applications from arts/humanities fields.
What is life like for Fulbrighters in the host country?
Applicants are expected to research their host country. Application materials should indicate a clear commitment to the host country community and a description of how you will engage with it.
Australia has a long and distinguished tradition of excellence in research and development. Across major global ranking systems, criteria, and academic disciplines, Australia consistently achieves high scores for the quality of its education, student satisfaction, and international standing. In addition to engaging with some of the world’s leading institutions, scholars have the opportunity to experience Australia’s remarkable natural landscapes. The nation’s vibrant multicultural environment further promotes collaboration, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding, enriching both academic endeavours and personal development.
Programs generally commence in late January or early February 2028, aligning with the Australian academic year and Fulbright orientation activities.
